Wiki - What are They?

Wiki - What are They?

A Marketing article written by Lynne Newbury

A Wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, and are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.

Using a Wiki you can improve the interaction and collaboration of project teams which is particularly beneficial for any team distributed over a large geographic area. Language and time zone issues become a thing of the past as your members use a centralised system for "controlled" collaboration.

Rather than maintaining multiple copies of a document and sharing ideas by email, a Wiki allows members of a team to pool their thoughts more easily. Wikis are not particularly new, but are now beginning to demonstrate the potential to replace other forms of groupware.

An additional benefit of a Wiki can vastly improve Search Engine Optimisation due to the large quantity of topic specific content gathered centrally. This "knowledge base" protects against Intellectual Property loss due to changes in team dynamics and also allows members to have a dedicated or part-time relationship with a project.

Our AspediaWIKI features include:

  • Content history with "roll back" to easily revert to past content
  • Multiple user levels with different access rights to view, edit or manage specific content
  • Content moderation so changes can be controlled using a "review/approval" process
  • RSS feed syndication to keep interested parties informed about specific changes
  • Detailed taxonomy so all data can be categorised for easy retrieval
  • Wiki Search to make information retrieval simple and fast
